The sandbag sofa we installed earlier was deconstructed and transformed into a green island to demonstrate the depaving potential at Park Albert. It was built right before the opening of our movie night on Saturday 12 October 2022, organized together with @cinemaximiliaan.
In 2016, Cinemaximiliaan’s first screening was under a blue tent at Maximiliaan park. In this park, a new friendship started which lead to the documentary ME MISS ME, starring Lubnan Alwazny in his first feature film. With this story in the back of our minds, we were over the moon to invite Cinemaximiliaan to show the same movie again, this time under a tent at Park Albert, together with inhabitants and passers-by. Afterward, we showed another local story: “Manhattan Brussel” by Kwinten Gernay, telling the story of the local boxer-hero Joseph ‘Kid’ Davidt right before the catastrophic demolishing of the entire neighborhood to make way for the Manhattan plan. We pondered over the topic of locals and newcomers and how the tumultuous history of Northern quarter impacted their lives. The evening showed us the potential of Park Albert II as a serene meeting place in the evening under the right conditions, through shared stories and food.
